If you watch enough of the shows I mentioned where they cover the investigations, a lot of planes crash before the crew can get to the part of the checklist that is part of the problem. That way pilots don't rely on the automated system by default. In fact, the automated checks should probably be run after the usual manual checklist. Pressing one button to tell you A, B, C, is in order, and X, Y, Z is not, can tip you off to something you might have not have checked in your manual checks.
